How to Choose and/or Register your Name

So you are looking to pick an SCA name, there are several things to consider while doing this.

– The first thing to understand is what is an SCA name and why pick one? The best place to find this information out is here:

What’s in an S.C.A. Name?
The why’s and wherefores of the naming process.

– Of course you can pick any name you wish and you certainly do not have to register your name at once or ever, for that matter. if you think that it is something you wish to do now or at some distant point in the future then you need to think about authenticity, etc. as you don’t want to have your name for 5 years then when you go to register it is disallowed and you have to come up with a brand new name.

Choosing a Society Name: Hints for Newcomers
Sound advice for anyone embarking on the endeavour.

– Once you have picked a name or at least decided within which time frame, culture, country to start from there are many places to start your search, I recommend the following:

Medieval Names Archive
This collection of articles on medieval and Renaissance names is intended to help historical re-creators to choose authentic names.

– Once you have decided on your name, done the research and are fairly certain that you have everything in order, it’s time to fill in the paperwork and submit the request. You can find the forms here:

What’s in an S.C.A. Heraldic Device?
The official SCA explanation from the heraldry website.

– No sorry you can’t have fairies laying with pink bunnies surrounded by frolicking purple elephants on a candy striped background. Nor can you use the Stark or Lannister devices from Game of Thrones. You have to have a plausible device that could/would have been used in the middle ages. Here are some sites that explain the rules much better than I can.
